Isaac: 5 months

Today is National Junk Food Day, here's a little eye candy. Enjoy!

The first picture shows a little problem that Ike has which most babies don't have to deal with:  BEDHEAD!
If I had taken the second picture in the 80's i would have added the text: Hangin' Tough!
The third pic is one of my favs because it captures the look i get from him all the time: adoration.

Ike isn't quite sitting alone yet, but he is getting a few seconds in here and there.  He is grasping everything that comes near his little hands, so watch your hair, earrings, beards, etc.  He has mastered a developmental skill recently, he now exchanges objects from one hand to the other.  You are SO impressed, aren't you.  He is really strong, and he likes to be held by the hands to help him stand up.  He has enormous thighs these days, so squeezable!  He is still a remarkable sleeper, and he has started enjoying mashed up banana most days.  We are planning to start sweet potato today, lucky boy.  Probably my favorite thing to do with Ike right now though is to talk with him.  He is quite the conversationalist, and he is very passionate about so many topics.  He likes talking politics and can chew your ear for some time re global warming.  As a matter of fact, he is calling me now.

30 Things About Me

1.  i have a light birthmark on the underside of my right bicep
2.  i don't like to be seen without mascara on because my eyelashes are very light, and i guess i have bought into our culture's belief that long, dark eyelashes are preferable
3.  i get headaches frequently and i know what each type means:  i have a tension headache, a not-enough-sleep headache, a dehydration headache, a sinus headache, and the rare (thankfully) migraine
4.  i am a little beyond addicted to Dark Chocolate Chex Mix, but i just discovered a Splenda sweetened ice cream called Bunny Tracks that i have been dreaming about since i had it three days ago
5.  i ran the 100 meter hurdles in high school.  i was NOT good, but my school was small and i did everything there, no, really, EVERYTHING...FFA, FHA, FBLA, Beta Club, basketball, softball, track, yearbook...
6.  by small i mean my graduating class, at a public school, was 15 people
7.  every day that i get to go to the gym and workout or lay by the pool while the kids are in childcare i feel like i am living a luxurious life, especially if i have time to shower and take my time getting ready while i'm there
8.  i rode the bus to school until 10th grade, and i swear to myself that i will not make my kids ride the bus
9.  there have been many things that i said i would never do to or with my kids that have already happened:  Clara occasionally eats in the car, case in point
10. i have an autographed drawing from the late Fay Jones, a flower he drew for me and penned, "a flower for Jessica"
11. i've been wearing the same pair of Chaco's for 7 years
12. i listen to the Bryant Park Project online almost every day
13. i have found over 100 four-leaf clovers so far, but never if i'm looking for one. can you find something you aren't looking for?
14. i have made a scrapbook for each year since 2000, i hope i will always do this
15. i love fresh flowers but i think they are a waste of money
16. i need to buy some new underwear
17. things i would do if money weren't an option:  travel, build a "green" house, knit with luxurious yarns a lot more, landscape our house, visit our friends all over the country (and beyond), pay someone to potty-train Clara (kidding), always have fresh flowers on the kitchen table, finish all our house projects that are driving me crazy
18. i am very afraid of spiders
19. i stopped biting my fingernails 3 years ago, my mom told me that as a kid she never had to clip my nails
20. zach and i were friends for 2 months, then dated for 2 years before we married 8 and a half years ago
21. sometimes i stare at Clara or Ike, awed that they were once in my belly
22. then i give thanks that they aren't in there now
23. right now i love how zach and i are learning so much more about ourselves and each other
24. right now i love how clara is so excited about life and the world around her
25. right now i love watching ike put his hands and feet in his mouth all at the same time
26. right now i am regretting starting this post
27. tomorrow i plan to finish Project Organize the Filing Cabinet and Shred All Those Important Papers
28. i got an ipod nano for my birthday, but my mom had one first
29. i don't think we will have any more children unless we adopt, which we aren't specifically planning, just being open to the possibility
30. i am happy to be 30 years old, i love my life and i am proud of where i am right now...thanks to those of you who are so important in my life, you make me happy

How could i NOT be happy spending most of my time with these two:

Fourth of July Festivities

Does this look like a party or what?!
A giant inflatable castle, a pickle spit with trophy winners, a life-threatening display of fireworks, sparklers for the little ones, yummy chocolate desserts, old friends and new friends, real-life pigs and turkeys and chickens, and a really beautiful day and night for enjoying it all.

Congrats to the pickle spit champs of 2008: Clay, Casie and Hud!

Clara: 21 months

If i were to sum up the past month in one word it would be social.  Clara has been happiest when she is with friends.  She wants to play with Ike, but she doesn't seem to understand why she can't change his diaper or pick him up by the neck or brush his hair without him crying.  She wants to take care of him the way she takes care of her babies.  The teachers at day care told me that Clara is their "little Mommy".  They say that anytime she is distressed they give her a doll and she starts comforting the baby and singing to it, rocking it, etc.  Her dolls at home are very well cared for too.  Lately they are all naked except for a diaper and shoes.  No exceptions.
Clara has started to ask about her friends.  Eva has been over a few times the past 2 weeks and now she asks for her all the time, along with Willow, River and Brayden.  It's been fun watching the interactions between Clara and other kids her age, they are all just becoming aware of how to play with each other rather than just side-by-side.

A few days ago Clara was looking at this little photo book i put together for her that has pictures of all her family and friends, and she pulled out a picture of herself with JuJu.  She has been carrying it around and yesterday i saw her showing one of her babies and saying "JuJu and PaPaw" and stuff about Willow and River.  Very sweet.

Memorable moments from Clara this month:
*blowing on ALL her food and saying "hot-hot-hot" before taking each bite
*breaking a plate while helping me with dishes
*loving bath time...she wants to take a bath every time she wakes up, and she never wants to get out
*she will sit on the potty chair in exchange for gum
*because Clara is often following me around, right underfoot, i bump into her a lot and i say "sorry, Clara, sorry, sorry, sorry." and now if she bumps into something she says, "sorrysorrysorry".
*despite being very aware how hot the grill is (she always points to it and says 'hot') she burned her hand this weekend when she wasn't paying attention, very minor, but perhaps a lesson was learned
*she is often overheard singing a form of ABC's and 123's or one of the other songs we sing
*she talks pretty much all the time
*she changes shoes every half hour or so all day long
*she has started to throw herself to the floor when she doesn't get her way, i have taken on a new role of The Punisher this past month
*i don't know how she got the pen or when, but baby has scribbles all over her face now
*Clara will come up to us and ask, "want a kiss" and then kiss our cheek
*along with giving High Fives, she now bumps knuckles and thinks it is so funny
*puddle stomping, jumping, walking backwards, and tickle fights are her favorite activities
*she has been known to break out in full dance mode without warning
*the blankie is back, and Clara lovingly refers to it as 'caulky'
As evidenced in the photo to follow, she still pulls in her bottom lip sometimes when deep in thought which she has done for as long as i can remember.

That last one is a pre-nap fit she threw because i wouldn't let her bring her friend Earthworm in the house for nap time.  Mean Mommy.
